Charity 2008/09 Update

Each season our Assocation nominates a charity for whom events and activities will be organised throughout the coming year. Last season (2008/09) this was Wrexham Hospital League of Friends. Throughout the year we organised a Race Night as well as continuing with our Annual Sportsmans' Evening. Both events were well supported by those in attendance as well as us receiving kind donations and support from individuals and companies (listed below). Following the tremendous efforts of those involved we were able to present a cheque for £4,360 to Margaret Bryden from the Wrexham Hospital League of Friends at our recent AGM. This was an absolutely phenominal achievement for an association our size so a huge thank you to all those involved for helping to make this possible.

Charity 09/10

This years chosen charity is Wrexham Maelor Hospital Diabetes Unit.

Wales and indeed the whole world is experiencing an epidemic of diabetes.  The numbers of people affected increases every year.  Some people with diabetes are undiagnosed because in the early years the condition often has few symptoms.  But diabetes can have serious long term consequences.  Modern treatments can delay or prevent these problems.  In fact the available treatments now are better than ever before.  The Wrexham diabetes unit aims to ensure that all diabetic patients in our area receive the best support and treatment.

The work of the unit is greatly helped by charitable support.  This enables us to produce educational literature, support education sessions, send staff to conferences, but textbooks, scentific journals and extra pieces of equipment.  Donations also help fund our research programme which has been investigating aspects of blood vessel function in diabetes and psychological features of diabetes.  Some major papers have been published from Wrexham in recent years.

Thank you very much for your support.
